Calculating ground loads is a critical part of aircraft design and development. It is required from the beginning during the feasibility and concept phases until in-service events. Today, the ground load calculation process mainly focuses on the interface loads between the landing gear and fuselage, and on internal loads in the flexible structure, generated by ground operations. The internal loads serve as input for the structural department, which uses them to calculate stress throughout the aircraft structure.

Typically, ground loads are calculated for different operational conditions. The industry jargon for this is bookcases. The first level of ground load bookcases are performed under quasi-static or static conditions, such as cornering and static landings. The next level would be dynamic bookcases, such as landing, heavy or rough landing, taxiing, towing, and running over a bump. Ground loads are also used for other aircraft development aspects such as failure cases, certification and in-service incidents.
