Renault Standardizes on LMS FALANCS for Predictive Durability Engineering

Дата пресс-релиза15 Feb 2002

LMS was chosen for advanced techniques and capabilities for handling large-sized models

Renault has selected LMS FALANCS as their company standard Fatigue Life Prediction analysis code. After competitive benchmarking and evaluation, Renault decided that LMS FALANCS products will replace an in-house durability code.

LMS FALANCS is the breakthrough LMS product that predicts when and where a product will break, for optimizing the design long before a physical prototype is available. One of its major strengths is its ability to model real life situations, such as large flexible bodies with hundreds of spot and seam welds subject to multiple independent loads. LMS FALANCS saves a huge amount of calculation time by intelligently reducing the amount of data to be handled in a fully automated process - without forcing the user to guess which areas on the component might be critical. A typical complete car body model with over 350,000 elements can be completed in a few hours rather then in a week with traditional techniques. This allows more upfront analysis and design optimization - reducing the number of physical prototypes.

All Renault Engineering Departments, together with the Material Engineering Department based their choice on many criteria that successfully differentiated the LMS offering from other options. LMS not only offered the most advanced technical capabilities, such as CDH spot weld modeling, but also the availability of fully competent local application and engineering support. The parallel multi-processor capability was very important to Renault's ability to quickly process the durability data on industrial sized models for complete vehicles. Another distinction of LMS was the commitment to incorporate standard French codes and Renault specific in-house methods into the LMS implementations. Examples are the incorporation of the multi-slope Dang Van damage parameter and the Bastenaire life curve coordinates.

The specific products to be implemented by Renault include FALANCS FEM for fatigue-life prediction of homogenous components, and FALANCS Spot Weld to analyze the body and sub-assemblies. Basic LMS TecWare modules will be used primarily for preparing the load sequences, as well as for rainflow counting. The structural analysis codes - FE interfaces - that can be used as input to FALANCS are MSC.Nastran and SDRC I-DEAS.

This successful agreement with Renault extends the list of successful implementations of LMS FALANCS at companies like BMW, Jaguar, CRF- Fiat Research, DaimlerChrysler, Ford, Honda, Mazda, Nissan, Volvo Truck, VW, TRW Automotive, Bosch, MMC Truck & Bus, Behr, EDAG, Knorr Bremse and the ZF Group.

LMS Solutions for Durability

The LMS solutions for durability engineering enable a tightly integrated durability engineering process: durability attributes are clearly targeted and defined at the beginning of the process, then refined and optimized long before expensive prototyping takes place. LMS integrates field data acquisition, data validation, and load data analysis (LMS TecWare) with durability virtual prototyping - including loads prediction tools like virtual test rigs, digital test track and tire modeling (LMS Virtual.Lab, LMS FALANCS, LMS DADS, LMS CDTire) and the control of multi-axis physical and virtual test rigs (LMS TWR).
