Optimizing the Design of Power Cylinder Systems
LMS OPTIMUS is to become part of a new tool that will let Federal Mogul engineers optimize power cylinder systems at the proposal stage faster and better than their current practice. The flexibility, accuracy and power of integration of LMS OPTIMUS led Federal Mogul to choose it as their optimization solution.
In the US automotive market, speed and innovation give successful component suppliers the margin they need to win contracts. Federal Mogul’s success within a tough and crowded market is due to its ability to deliver innovative solutions to OEM’s in a shorter time than the competition, with more value, and at a better price. In an initiative geared to streamline the design process for power cylinder components, Federal Mogul is putting together a system that reduces the cost and time inherent in their current process: multiple product design tools, separate design databases, and a labor intensive CAD process. OPTIMUS will be integrated into a new system design framework to automate routine design scenarios and facilitate detailed optimization studies.
The next generation of design tools will simulate all parts in the power cylinder system in a common integrated environment: piston, piston rings, piston pin, connecting rods, and rod bearings. These tools address all aspects of power cylinder design: structural, thermal, dynamic, gas flow, lubrication, etc. OPTIMUS will be used to optimize at a power cylinder system level and at a power cylinder component level.
