A new framework for Test data, based on the existing ASAM ODS standards
LMS international, the worldwide leader in Test, CAE and Engineering Service solutions for functional performance engineering, worked with the Association for Standardization of Automation and Measuring Systems (ASAM) to define and promote a new international standard for NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) data. LMS is a member of ASAM since 2000, and contributed over 20 years of experience in NVH testing and analysis.
Automotive OEMs and suppliers typically use a multitude of testing and measurement solutions throughout their product development and manufacturing process. However, these systems are mostly incompatible, which makes it difficult to exchange data, and to operate different systems together. The goal of ASAM is to reduce these unnecessary costs by defining standardized interfaces for the test hardware and software used within the automotive industry. ASAM brings end users and suppliers of automation and measurement systems together to jointly define new models for test data.
The ASAM Open Data Services (ASAM ODS) standardizes the organization of and access to measurement data. ODS includes a generic data model to describe the test object in detail, the measurement procedure and equipment along with the measurement data itself. On top of ODS, ASAM developed a number of inter-related standards. For instance, standards for the integration of micro-controller-based control systems for engines (ASAM MCD), for automated calibration systems in engine test cells (ASAM ACI) and for measurement devices (ASAM GDI).
To permit universal, platform independent access to NVH test data, LMS actively participated in the development and the promotion of the ODS standard for NVH. Using common ASAM ODS terms to describe the NVH test objects will enable consistent data exchange between departments and companies, even if they are active in different engineering disciplines. For example, an engine sound power curve as function of rpm measured in the Acoustics department can now be documented with an engine performance curve measured during the calibration of the engine in another division of the company.
“LMS acknowledges the industry need to share test data among different departments such as program management, conceptual design, component development, and system integration. Easily sharing data between departments, and even with suppliers is one of the keys to shortening the development cycle. As such, LMS played a key role in defining and promoting the ASAM-ODS standard for NVH”, commented Filip Pintelon Corporate Vice-President and General Manager Test Division at LMS. After the completion of the ASAM ODS standard for NVH, LMS will integrate the standard into its entire product line, from LMS Test.Lab for NVH testing and analysis to LMS Virtual.Lab, its integrated platform for functional performance simulation.
A group of German automotive companies founded ASAM in 1991. Now ASAM receives the support of European and US automotive OEMs and suppliers. Currently there are over 125-member companies worldwide. As the automotive industry becomes increasingly global the standards developed by ASAM will not be limited to Europe, but will emerge as the recognized worldwide standards.
